HISTORY

Garden Reach area is connected to the history of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah . The area has a rich tradition but there was no instruction for higher studies.In view of this problem Late Hiralal Ghose took the initiative to establish a college. Late Promodabala Ghose, wife of Late Hiralal Ghose donated the land. Some eminent personalities of this locality were engaged in this Karmayajña .14th December 1962 was the historical day. A trust was formed and HARIMOHAN GHOSE College was established.Shri Hiralal Ghose, Dr. Batakrishna Kundu, Shri Rabindranath Ghose, Dr. Hrishikesh Pal were pioneering members of the trust.


The area is adjacent to Metiabruz the hub of ready-made textile clothes . An area populated mostly by minority population had certain inhibitions regarding Higher education in general and particularly regarding the the education of girls . But the college since its inception had its affiliation with the University of Calcutta to teach B.com ( Honours and General courses ) and BA ( General course ) with only Bengali having the Honours affiliation . The college started teaching + 2 courses affiliated to West Bengal Higher Secondary Council to make its foray into the science stream where physics, chemistry and Mathematics and bio sciences. Later the college with its motto From Darkness to Light and More Light managed under able stewardship of its Govening Body and proactive principals and teachers and non teaching staff to transfer the science courses to BSc courses of Calcutta University. From 1990s onward the graph of the college continued to rise with the granting of Honours affiliation in various Humanities subjects after thorough inspection by The Calcutta University authorities in each and every subjects. From the millennium college did away with +2 courses and applied for Honours affiliation for History, Political science English and Urdu in BA stream and Physiology , Mathematics and Economics in B.sc stream . The college caters to a large hinterland of atleast 12 Higher secondary schools and has a name for being an institution that not only teaches but also inspires students to be good contributors to social upliftment.
