Harimohan Ghose College: Nurturing Inclusivity and Empowerment

Harimohan Ghose College stands as a beacon of educational excellence and social responsibility in the vibrant community of Metiabruz, Kolkata. Established with a mission to provide quality education and foster holistic development, our college is deeply committed to creating an inclusive environment that respects and celebrates diversity. Our unique initiatives, “Sangam” and “Setu,” embody our dedication to promoting religious harmony and gender inclusivity, respectively.

SANGAM: Bridging Religious and Cultural Divides

Sangam, meaning 'confluence,' is our best practice aimed at fostering religious harmony and cultural inclusivity. In a region as diverse as ours, where people from various religious and cultural backgrounds coexist, promoting mutual respect and understanding is crucial.

Religious and Cultural Festivals:

- At Harimohan Ghose College, we celebrate a myriad of festivals that reflect the rich tapestry of our student body. From Saraswati Puja, Durga Puja, and Eid, to Christmas and Holi, our campus becomes a vibrant mosaic of celebrations. These events provide an opportunity for students to learn about and appreciate different cultures and religions.

Community Engagement:

- Our commitment to religious harmony extends beyond the campus. The college actively participates in community service initiatives, engaging with local religious organizations to promote peace and understanding. This outreach helps in breaking down barriers and building stronger, more cohesive communities.

SETU: Building Bridges of Inclusivity and Empowerment

Setu, meaning 'bridge,' symbolizes our efforts to bridge the gaps in understanding and inclusivity concerning gender rights and LGBTQIA+ issues. This initiative aims to create a supportive environment for all students, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

LGBTQIA+ Sensitization and Support:

- Our seminar titled "Rainbow Arch: Voices and Views, Social Discrimination leads to Phobia – A Threat to Mental Health," held on June 29, 2024, was a cornerstone of SETU initiative. Esteemed speakers like Ms. Mrittika Chatterjee and Dr. Debarati Das shared their insights, educating the community on the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and the importance of mental health support. The involvement of our own professor, highlighted the college's commitment to inclusivity.

Women's Rights and Empowerment:

- Harimohan Ghose College has a robust Women's Development Cell that actively supports female students and staff. Key initiatives include:

- Counselling and Awareness Programs: Regular sessions on sexual harassment and domestic violence, including a program held on December 17, 2022, organized by the ICC.

- Empowerment Seminars: Discussions on women's empowerment, such as the seminar on January 28, 2023, by the Department of Political Science.

- International Women's Day Celebrations: Annual celebrations that highlight women's achievements, with the most recent event on March 10, 2023.

Support Facilities:

- The college ensures a safe and supportive environment for female students through facilities such as lady security guards, CCTV surveillance, sanitary napkin dispensers managed by lady non-teaching staff, and exclusive ladies' rooms.
