The Harimohan Ghose College was established in 1963, by the scions of the Ghose family of Fatehpur, Garden Reach with the help of the residents of the area to provide the fruits of Higher education to the students of the area who then were detached from proper Kolkata. So years passed by the College become a centre of higher learning for many who unfortunately came from less privileged background. The College with its motto from “Darkness to Light and More Light” has tried its best to fulfill the goals for which this College was setup. Now having completed so many years of service to the society, the College can claim to have a history yet a history which need not be quoted but understood by all well wishers and stake holders of the College.
As the Principal of the College, my request goes out to all Teachers, Non-Teaching Staff members, students and guardians that with dedication, discipline and determination, we can cross all hurdles and establish this College as a top-notch College amongst the College affiliated with University of Calcutta. To all students of this College including those who would start their journey to Higher education from this College may appeal is be punctual, be regular, be attentive , be inquisitive , ask questions and always have ambition for all of you with young minds can soar to the skies.
With its avowed Tagorean motto – Jnan Jetha Mukta, ‘Where Knowledge is Free’ – our College attempts not just to disseminate knowledge irrespective of differences, but also, in keeping with the Tagorean vision of education, to promote a more holistic approach towards the same as a means of liberating the mind and spirit from the bondage of ignorance, prejudice and unreason.
In fact, commitment to serve our students by providing quality education to all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion and economic status is one of the basic tenets on which our college stands. We are determined to help our new generation to build a 'brave new world' where only love, fraternity, peace and harmony will rule. I wish all the students a very happy beginning of their career and hope to extend the 'HARIMOHAN GHOSE COLLEGE FAMILY' with the support of parents, alumni, neighbours and other academic bodies with whom we collaborate.
We have consistently maintained a sustained programme of development, the pace of which has gained momentum with every passing year. Under the affiliation to University of Calcutta, it currently runs Undergraduate Courses in fourteen (14) subjects- B.A, B. Sc and B.Com (Honours & General) and Add-on courses with various other training courses ---------. To help students in their career prospects, the college has an active Placement Cell which arranges campus interviews and recruitment by the industry and also counsels them regarding career options. The College has also in the last few years revived the NSS unit whose members, under the effective guidance of the respective teachers-in-charge, are actively engaged in extension activities related to social upliftment and personality development. A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Keeping this in view, the College encourages active involvement indoor and outdoor games in our own ground under good guidance of Physical Instructor/ Teacher-In-Charge.
Human resources constitute the principal asset of our College, and these include students and staff – both teaching and non-teaching – as well as other stakeholders including the alumni. Nurturing and nourishing these resources our dynamic group of Teaching, Non Teaching and students who believe in maintaining a healthy atmosphere through good human relations in College conducive to both academic and co-curricular activities.
Helping to steer all these, the Principal is aided by the various bodies of the College, i.e., the Governing Body, the Teachers’ Council, Non-teaching Staff members, the Students’ Union, the Alumni Association, and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).
Moreover, the objective of this century with the NEW EDUCATION POLICY recently announced by the University Grants Commission, Govt. of India-old institution is to focus on the all-round development of students and mould them into responsible citizens of the country.
